The Heart of the Shadows
October 7, 2024
The sun dipped low as Rowan pushed deeper into the forest, boots crunching on the carpet of fallen leaves. Every instinct screamed at him to turn back. The Forest of Forgotten Shadows was infamous—those who entered rarely returned. But he had no choice. Not if he wanted to save his sister.
“Just a little farther,” he whispered, clutching the worn map his grandmother had given him. The map marked a clearing with an ancient rune: Find the Heart, and the Shadows will kneel.
Elara, his sister, had been taken by the Shadow Queen, a malevolent spirit who ruled these woods. He had seen her minions slip into their village at dusk, dragging Elara away. Without hesitation, Rowan followed. Now, only the faint glow of his lantern kept the darkness at bay.
The deeper he ventured, the more the forest changed. The trees twisted into grotesque shapes, and shadows moved on their own, whispering his name.
“Rowan… turn back…”
He shuddered but pushed forward, gripping his lantern tighter. Finally, he reached the clearing. A massive tree stood at its center, its branches dripping with small glass lanterns. Each one held a tiny, flickering flame, casting dancing shadows across the ground.
Beneath the tree stood a tall, cloaked figure—her gown as black as midnight. The Shadow Queen’s eyes, deep as the abyss, locked onto his.
“You’ve come for your sister?” she asked softly.
Rowan’s heart raced. “Let her go!”
The Queen smiled, gesturing. A shadow beside her shifted and formed into Elara, her eyes wide and vacant.
“Elara!” Rowan took a step forward, but dark tendrils coiled tighter around her, making her gasp.
“One more step, and she will fade forever,” the Queen warned, voice sharp as ice. “Why risk yourself for her? She belongs here now.”
Rowan forced himself to stand tall. “I won’t let you keep her.”
“And what can you do?” the Queen mocked. “Look around—each of these lanterns holds a soul I’ve claimed. Elara will join them.”
Rowan glanced at the lanterns. The map’s cryptic phrase echoed in his mind: Find the Heart…
Taking a deep breath, he drew his father’s small blade and plunged it into the base of the tree. The ground trembled, and the lanterns began to sway. The Queen screamed, her form flickering.
“What have you done?!” she shrieked.
“I’m cutting out your heart,” Rowan replied through gritted teeth, driving the blade deeper. The tree split with a deafening crack, and lanterns shattered, releasing blinding light.
The Queen wailed, dissolving into shadow as the spirits within the lanterns burst free.
“No…!” she howled, vanishing into the wind.
Rowan stumbled, catching Elara as the shadows around her melted away. Her eyes cleared, and she blinked up at him.
“Rowan?” she whispered. “Is it… really you?”
He nodded, tears brimming. “It’s me. You’re safe now.”
Hand in hand, they turned and left the forest, the spirits’ light rising like a thousand stars into the night.
