Under the Stars
February 27, 2025
The summer air was thick with warmth, and the sound of crickets filled the night as Sophie sat on the porch swing of the old cabin. The stars above were brighter than she could ever remember seeing, scattered across the sky like glitter. She tugged the blanket closer around her shoulders, wishing she could capture the quiet magic of the moment.
It had been a rough year. Work had been overwhelming, and she hadn’t taken the time to relax in months. That’s why, when her best friend Mia suggested they spend the weekend in the cabin her family owned, Sophie had jumped at the chance.
It was a quiet retreat from everything. Just her, Mia, and the calming rhythm of nature. But as the evening stretched on, Sophie couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was missing.
“Not so bad, huh?” Mia’s voice broke through her thoughts, and Sophie turned to see her standing at the edge of the porch, a soft smile on her face.
Sophie shrugged, trying to play it cool. “Yeah, it’s nice. Peaceful.”
Mia stepped forward, leaning against the railing next to Sophie. They both stared up at the stars.
“Do you ever feel like… you’re just waiting for something?” Sophie asked, her voice soft, unsure if she wanted to say the words out loud.
Mia turned to her, her gaze searching. “What do you mean?”
Sophie hesitated before speaking again. “Like, you’re stuck in the middle of everything, but you’re waiting for something big to happen. Something that makes sense of all of it.”
Mia was quiet for a moment. Then she nudged Sophie gently with her elbow. “I think we all feel that way sometimes. But the thing is, maybe you’re already exactly where you’re supposed to be.”
Sophie looked at her, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“Look around you,” Mia said, her voice warm. “The world’s moving at a thousand miles per hour, and you’re here. You’re sitting on this porch, under the stars, surrounded by all of this beauty. Maybe the big thing you’re waiting for is just here, right in front of you.”
Sophie was about to reply when she heard it—footsteps crunching in the gravel. She turned, surprised to see a figure walking toward them from the tree line. The tall, broad-shouldered silhouette was unmistakable.
“James?” Sophie asked, her voice almost a whisper.
James smiled as he stepped into the light, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Hey, didn’t mean to interrupt,” he said. His tousled brown hair and warm smile were enough to make Sophie’s heart skip a beat, though she tried to hide it.
He had been a part of the group back in college, and despite the years, there was always an easy camaraderie between them. Sophie hadn’t seen him in months, and somehow, that distance only seemed to make her feel more nervous.
“You didn’t interrupt anything,” Mia said with a wink, stepping back into the cabin.
James sat down beside Sophie, the soft smell of pine and earth following him. He looked at the stars, then turned to her. “Nice night, huh?”
Sophie nodded, feeling suddenly a little more vulnerable under his gaze. “Yeah, it is.”
There was a pause, the quiet comfort of the night wrapping around them. Then James cleared his throat.
“Listen, Sophie… I know it’s been a while, but I’ve been thinking.”
Sophie’s heart picked up, her pulse quickening. She turned to face him fully, waiting.
“I’ve missed you,” James said softly, his voice sincere. “And I don’t think I ever told you… I always cared more than I let on.”
Sophie’s breath caught in her throat. For the first time, it felt like the moment she’d been waiting for had arrived.
Under the stars, with the night around them, she realized that maybe everything she’d been waiting for was here all along.
She smiled, her heart finally settling in its right place. “I’ve missed you too.”
James smiled back, his hand gently reaching for hers, their fingers intertwining in the stillness of the night.
