At first it was dismissed as equipment interference from nearby infrastructure. Then engineers confirmed that every transmitter in Harrow Station had been physically disconnected from power sources years ago. There should have been nothing left to generate a signal. And yet, the broadcast persisted with mechanical precision, as if the station itself had learned how to speak without assistance.

A pattern that resembled speech but was stretched and compressed in unnatural ways, as if filtered through a medium that was never meant to carry language. It mentioned her last assignment, her clearance level, and a conversation she had had three days earlier with a supervisor about requesting reassignment due to fatigue.
Mara felt a cold pressure building in her chest. She disconnected her external audio feed and relied only on ambient sound, but the voice did not stop. It no longer needed her equipment. It was present in the room itself, carried through vibration in metal and air.
Then the station spoke a full sentence, clearly and deliberately, without distortion.
“We remember you.”
The lights in the control room flickered despite no active power being reported. Mara turned toward the hallway, considering immediate evacuation, but the exit behind her was no longer the same. The corridor lights had shifted, subtly altering their spacing and direction, as if the station had reconfigured itself while she was not looking.
She attempted to retrace her steps, but every corridor now seemed to lead back toward the central hub. The structure had become circular in a way that defied the blueprint she had studied. When she reached the central room again, she found the terminal already active, its screen displaying a live feed of the station’s internal corridors. On every feed, no matter the angle, she could see herself moving through the structure moments before she actually arrived there, as if the station was recording her before she made decisions.
The broadcast stopped for the first time since she arrived.
The silence that followed was worse.
Then, from every surface at once, the station spoke again, not as fragmented sound but as unified presence. It told her that she was now part of the signal, that all transmissions eventually required a listener, and that Harrow Station had finally found one that stayed long enough to be remembered.
Her final message to surface control was never fully transmitted. It broke apart midway, replaced by static that matched the exact rhythm of her heartbeat.
And after that, the station continued broadcasting as usual at 3:03 AM, even though no one was left to monitor it anymore, repeating a signal that now contained something unmistakably human within it.
