The Midnight Visitor
September 26, 2023
In a quaint, isolated cottage deep in the woods, Emily lay alone in her bed, wrapped in the warmth of her quilt. The midnight hour had arrived when an eerie rustling from the shadows caught her attention. She whispered, “Who’s there?”
Silence hung in the air before a voice, soft and haunting, replied, “It’s me, Emily. I’ve come to play.”
Heart pounding, Emily strained to make out the figure lurking in the darkness. The voice continued, “Do you remember our childhood games, Emily? Hide and seek, tag in the moonlight?”
Terror gripped her as she recognized the voice, the voice of her long-lost friend Sarah, who had mysteriously disappeared in these very woods years ago. Stammering, Emily asked, “Sarah? Is it really you?”
A chilling laughter echoed through the room, and a ghostly figure emerged from the shadows, her eyes hollow and her presence otherworldly. “Yes, Emily, it’s me. I’ve missed you.”
Sarah’s outstretched hand beckoned Emily to play, but Emily knew this was no game. With dread in her heart, she whispered, “I’m sorry, Sarah, but you’re not the friend I remember,” and pulled the covers over her head, praying the midnight visitor would vanish once and for all.
